| Question: |
Hi. (1) I'd like to know if there are any documented cases whereby there was HIV infected blood on a glass and someone got accidentally cut by the glass and got infected with HIV? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this?
(2) What about knives? If someone gets cut by a knife with HIV blood on it will the person get HIV? Are there any documented cases of this happening? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this?
(3) If lets say someone on the street accidentally fell down and is bleeding profusely, and i help the person and my hands are covered with his blood, will i get diseases from his blood (assuming that in case 1 i have an open wound on my hand, and case 2 i do not have open wound on my hand)? what are the chances of catching diseases from case 1 and 2? are there any documented cases of this incidents whereby the passerby got infected with diseases?
Thank you very much for your reply. |
| Answer - |
Hypothetically, if there is fresh blood-stain on the glass or knife and the blood gets into another person, there may be a risk for blood borne infections like HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C.
Blood contact with fresh open wound may put one at risk for these infections as well. |

| Question: |
Hie, i dated my ex of 2 years bt he has had multiple sex partners even when we were together. i admit even i do had unprotected sexual intercourse with him. We have already broken up 6 months ago. Should i go for the HIV testing now or should i wait longer? if i were to go for the testing now, hw much will it cost? |
| Answer - |
You may wish to consider taking an STI screening which involves an examination of the vagina using a speculum. Swabs will be taken from the vagina and cervix. Additional swabs may also be taken from the rectum and throat. You will be tested for:
Candida
Bacterial Vaginosis
Trichomonas Vaginalis
Chlamydia
Gonorrhoea
You can also go for blood tests to screen for HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis. This blood test can be done 3 months after the exposure.
You can refer to our main page for the charges at the DSC Clinic, but we will not be able to advise on the charges of others. |

| Question: |
excerpt from an answer.
1. blood borne infections like HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C.
what does blood borne really mean?
2.The other STIs are by contact with the discharge, affected skin etc. and the face is not a conducive environment for these infections.
What are the difference between 1(blood borne infections) & 2(by contact with the discharge, affected skin)?
Does that mean STIs without blood won't be affected by blood borne infections? |
| Answer - |
Infections by micro-organisms can be spread by air-borne like flu, water-borne like cholera, blood-borne like HIV etc.
The individual STIs are spread by its respective routes. There are infections that can be spread by contact with body fluid like blood, and the infections are HIV, Syphilis etc. In addition, there are also infections that are spread by contact with the affected genital skin like Herpes, Warts, Syphilis etc. Moreover, there are infections that can be spread by contact with genital discharges like Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia etc.

| Question: |
hi doctor. i have a question. i am worried now. On the 25 July 08, i went to a pub to celebrate my friend's bday n met with few filipino gals there. after the event, me n my friend brought the gals back to the hotel. Before making love, both me and the gal took a shower and cleanse ourselves with soap. We have sex once and i used a condom. unfortunately when we were having an oral sex before having sex, i did not use a condom. on the 12 july 08 we did the same thing again. im really worried and stressed out right now. i have regretted my actions.i am having slight flu, nausea, vomitting now.Would like to know if i can be infected with STD-STI/HIV&AIDs? Kindly advise thank you |
| Answer - |
The flu, nausea and vomiting are not related to STI and HIV.
If you did have protected oral, vaginal and anal sex, the risk is minimal for STI and HIV. However, on account of the unprotected oral sex, this poses a low risk for HIV but other STI such as Gonorrhoea, Herpes and Syphilis can be transmitted. The risk of HIV transmission through unprotected oral sex increases if there is contact with body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids and blood, with the presence of sores and broken skin.
Do not put yourself at such risk. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV. |

| Question: |
Dear Doc,
I'm really very worried.... i just had first-time unprotected sex with a vietnam pub girl... which is 15th aug..i'm now really afraid that i may get HIV or AIDS .. what should i do? how long more should i go for a blood test... |
| Answer - |
Unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex, will put one at risk for STI and HIV. Do not put yourself at such risk. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
You may wish to consider performing an STI screening to allay your fears. In STI screening, a person can go for a blood test 3 months after exposure for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B. A Herpes blood test will be reliable if done under the Type Specific Serology Test (HSV TSST) for Herpes but it may not be widely available. This screens for previous exposure to the virus, which can be done 8 weeks after the exposure.
For a male, other screening involves swabs to be taken from the penis. Additional swabs may also be taken from the rectum and throat. He will need to hold urine for 4 hours before the swabs can be taken. The tests can be done shortly after exposure and will screen for:
- Gonorrhoea
- NGU/Chlamydia |

| Question: |
hello
this may not be the appropriate forum to ask so dont flame me
recently i had one of those happy endings massages. which was no big deal. the masseuse, rubbed her naked torso against my naked body; again, no big deal.
she then rubbed her vagina (with her panties on) on my penis which was smeared with baby oil. the sensation was very much like unprotected penetrative sex, it lasted no longer than 5 strokes (she was so freaking hot i couldnt keep it in!) and then i ejaculated.
no condoms were used.
now there are 2 questions
- has anyone had such an experience before, where baby oil on penis + panties-covered vaginal rub would actually feel like actual penetration?
- assuming the masseuse had panties had a hole in the vaginal area (i know that sounded ridiculous but bear with me) and actual penetration occured, what are the chances of contracting any disease? |
| Answer - |
Your encounter did not put you at risk for any STIs. |

| Question: |
Hi Doc, what if i went to a massage health centre, and I got fresh cuts/wounds on my feet, and her hands touches or rub against my feet while massaging... If she is infected with HIV or other STD, would i be at any risk at all? i.e. i am not sure if she has fresh cuts on her hands...
I did not have sex with her, nor even hand job (though the massage was done with me naked).
Do i need to go for tests ?
Pls advise as I am very worried...until now...Thanks ! |
| Answer - |
You are not at risk from the massage. There will be a risk for certain STIs like HIV if both parties have fresh open wound that comes into contact at the same time. |

I have a stable GF and also staying with her at the moment and im afraid to have sex with her. should i go for any checks?can u pls advise? |

You may wish to visit a doctor to get the redness on penis in check and you may wish to consider an STI screening.
Meanwhile, it is of good practise to have protected sex with all partners. |

| Question: |
I recently had protected sex with a prostitute in Geylang. I check whether the condoms are torn after sex by filling them up with water. I did double bagging and there were no slipping of the condoms during intercourse which merely lasted around 2 minute.I want to know the types of tests I might consider to do to check for STDs and HIV and it is my first time having causual sex. Thank you. |
| Answer - |
If you did have protected oral, vaginal and anal sex, the risk is minimal for STI and HIV. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Double condoms are not recommended as this may lead to friction between the condoms causing tears.
Not all STIs will surface with the signs and symptoms and can be tested. One can look out for genital discharge, rash, growth and ulcer as a gauge for infections.
In STI screening, a person can go for a blood test 3 months after exposure for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B. | Question: |
On July 13, 2008 I had a 10 minute body message in South Africa followed by mutual masturbation with a girl whose HIV status in not known to me. I used my right hand finger which had no visible tear and she used her left hand on the outer skin of my penis. At one time during masturbation, the girl used her right hand to put her spit to lubricate the upper part of her vagina. About 5-7 minutes after this event, she switched her hand and so now her right hand was on the outer skin of my penis. While her right hand was dry by this time, it is possible that she would still have some HIV virus on her right hand assuming she was HIV positive. Upon conclusion of masturbation about 10-15 minutes later, I used soap to wash my penis with my un-contaminted left hand, and I am worried that during this washing some possible virus transferred from her right hand to the outer skin of my penis might have been carried by water or my hand to my foreskin. I am also not circumsized and I have read that there are some receptors on the covered part of foreskins of un-circumcized men. Whle I do not remember, I may have also sucked her nipple for 10 seconds. I got tested negative on July 27--2 weeks after the incident. What are my chances of contracting HIV? Should I be tested again for HIV?
Also what are my chances of contracting Hep B assuming the girl had Hep B? Please note that I had the first shot of Hep B vaccination on June 31, 2008 and I still have two more shots of the Hep B vaccine series to be completed.
I am very fightened and would very much appreciate from you as soon as possible. Thank you. |
| Answer - |
Basing from this detailed description of your encounter, you are not at risk for STI and HIV. Hence, you do not need any test. |

| Question: |
dear dr.
recently after visiting my gynae, i'm diagnosed with vaginitis and candida.
as my bf and i did have sex without condom just before the infection; what are the test he can undergo to check if he is infected. would DSC clinic have service to check for it or do we have to go to an urologist? |
| Answer - |
Yeast infection for the males may give rise to penile itch and rash. If there is this discomfort experienced by him, he can visit a doctor for the test and treatment. There is no test for individuals without the signs and symptoms.
If Bacterial Vaginosis impacts on a male, one may have discomfort like mild pain, itch and discharge from the urethra. A screening by means of urethral smear can be carried out to determine the cause. He may wish to attend the DSC Clinic or an urologist. |

| Answer - |
You can check the details of your test with the institution that had performed the screening. On account of the unprotected sex, you may wish to do some screening. In STI screening, a person can go for a blood test 3 months after exposure for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B.
The throat problem, headache, eye and leg pain are not related to STI. You can consult a doctor for that. |

| Question: |
I had cervical vaccination (2nd dose) on 26 July and had sex with my bf soon after. If my bf had STD, will I get it? |
| Answer - |
We do not know what is the vaccination that you had taken as you did not mention. We assume that you are referring to Gardasil. There is no vaccine at present to act against all STI including HIV except for 2 types of infection, ie Hepatitis B and certain Human Papilloma Virus that can lead to Genital Warts.
If you are referring to Gardasil, this vaccination is to guard against HPV Types 6, 11, 16 and 18 only. HPV Types 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.
Gardasil may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer and genital warts. It is important to continue regular cervical cancer screenings and note that it will not protect against infection caused by other HPV types.
You are still susceptible to STI if your partner has the infection. |

| Question: |
Hi firstly pls let me express my appreciation for all the good deeds you guys are doing here. I did something stupid which I cannot forgive myself, and would like to seek your advice. 5 days ago after a massage session, the male masseur offered me a handjob. He rubbed his naked body against mine, and there was some short moments my penis had close contact with his (I remember he had no erection, and I pressume no fluid out). Then he spit onto his hands, to make it wet with his saliva, and rub against my penis. We had no sexual intercourse but at the end I did "come" under his hands. By the time my sense came out, I became scared. Question: (1) does saliva carry HIV or any type of bacteria? (2) if I want clear my doubt of any possible STI due to close contact with his genitals, how soon should I see a doctor? (3) Your consellor said I have to wait til symptons are out, so what are the symptons (4) am I at HIV risks? I had sleepless nights. I will be responsble for my mistake, and appreciate your advice. Rgds/CL |
