Hi. (1) I\'d like to know if there are any documented cases whereby there was HIV infected blood on a glass and someone got accidentally cut by the glass and got infected with HIV? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this? (2) What about knives? If someone gets cut by a knife with HIV blood on it will the person get HIV? Are there any documented cases of this happening? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this? (3) If lets say someone on the street accidentally fell down and is bleeding profusely, and i help the person and my hands are covered with his blood, will i get diseases from his blood (assuming that in case 1 i have an open wound on my hand, and case 2 i do not have open wound on my hand)? what are the chances of catching diseases from case 1 and 2? are there any documented cases of this incidents whereby the passerby got infected with diseases? Question: I have a lazer operation to remove genital warts.

May I know will warts grow at groin area instead on the penis?

How to make sure that the problem cured fully and will not be recurred? Any need of medication to use after the lazer to ensure full recovery? If yes, what type of medication I can get on my own from the pharmacy?

Thanks
Answer - Generally, genital warts impact on the genital and perianal area. However, there may be instances where the groin gets the infection as well.
Since warts is caused by viruses, there is no cure at present and there may be a chance of recurrence. However, adequate treatment including laser surgery can greatly assist patient to cope with the condition.
You can visit a doctor when this condition happens again.

Question: I had cervical vaccination (2nd dose) on 26 July and had sex with my bf soon after. If my bf had STD, will I get it?
Answer - We do not know what is the vaccination that you had taken as you did not mention. We assume that you are referring to Gardasil. There is no vaccine at present to act against all STI including HIV except for 2 types of infection, ie Hepatitis B and certain Human Papilloma Virus that can lead to Genital Warts.
If you are referring to Gardasil, this vaccination is to guard against HPV Types 6, 11, 16 and 18 only. HPV Types 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.
Gardasil may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer and genital warts. It is important to continue regular cervical cancer screenings and note that it will not protect against infection caused by other HPV types.

You are still susceptible to STI if your partner has the infection.

Question: A few questions regarding HPV.
(a) Can a man get Oral HPV if he performed unprotected oral sex on a woman?
(b) Can a man get Genital HPV if a woman performed unprotected oral sex to the man?
(c) Most of the HPV will disappear after 1-2 years. If those HPV disappear, will they re-appear again after sometimes?
(d) Once those HPV disappear, can the woman take the vaccine and prevent the HPV reappear or prevent against future HPV?
(e) Can man takes HPV DNA test?
(f) Is there HPV DNA test available in DSC clinic? How much is the charge of the test?
(g) All charges as indicated in this web site is appliable to foreigners?

Thanks.
Answer - (a) & (b) There is a risk of transmission of the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) leading to warts with the practise of unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex.

(c) Warts is treatable but not curable, thus, there may be a chance for recurrence. The recurrence is unpredictable as it is individualised. Some cases may recur after some time while others may not have the experience again.

(d) There is no vaccine at present to act against all STI including HIV except for 2 types of infection, ie Hepatitis B and certain Human Papilloma Virus that can lead to Genital Warts.
If you are referring to Gardasil, this vaccination is to guard against HPV Types 6, 11, 16 and 18 only. HPV Types 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.
However, Gardasil is recommended for girls and women ages 9 to 26, and very important, must have no prior sexual exposures before.
Gardasil may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer and genital warts. It is important to continue regular cervical cancer screenings and note that it will not protect against infection caused by other HPV types.

(e) & (f) At present the HPV-DNA test is mainly a research tool. This is not available for diagnostic purpose.

(g) The DSC Clinic is a public clinic and we attend to both citizens and non-citizens. The charges have been standardised for all patients.

Question: hi. i would like to know where does the many strains of HPV comes from...mainly the ones that cause genital warts... i know it can be passed from skin to skin contact but what are its origins??? does it come from animals or plants???
can two perfectly healthy(no HPV) clean individuals ever get HPV(warts) from having sex????
Answer - There are more than 100 different strains of the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV). Some of them are known to have cause Genital Warts, which is an STI, whereas others are linked to skin warts on the feet, fingers etc but are not STI.
These exist in human and are transmittable in the human population.
Uninfected individuals will not be able to transmit the virus.

Question: Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to know if there are any tests to diagnose HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). I have read that Anal Pap test are available to detect any signs of anal or penile cancer related to HPV.

I would like to ask you if there is any test I can do to detect HPV or complications related to HPV at the DSC clinic.

Thank you.

Among the HPV types that are known to cause Genital Warts, there are only some that are known to cause cancer of the genital area.

Genital warts is diagnosed by its clinical appearances, ie. the cauliflower growths. There is no test available for screening. For women, a Pap smear may be able to pick up the virus from the cervix.

Question: It was mentioned in this site's Q&A section that genital warts is diagnosed by its clinical appearances, ie. the cauliflower growths. What is the impact if these clinical appearance are not treated especially if the growth is in the cervix?

Answer - Warts is a treatable condition though it is not curable at present. There are more than 100 types of the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) leading to warts but only some are known to be cancer causing. In addition, warts if left untreated can cause inconveniences like discomfort and risk of transmission.
One can perform a Pap smear annually to screen for abnormalities of the cervix. The existence of HPV in the cervix may be detected as well.

Question: I had been having intercourse with my ex-bf for the last 6 years and he had never had any problems or genital warts. A week ago, my new bf found genital warts on himself and since his last sexual intercourse was 1 year ago, and he had never had genital warts before, we assumed it had to be transmitted through me since I had multiply partners before when I was much younger. However all my previous HIV & pap smears are negative.

I had cold sores on my lips before about 2 – 3 years ago and my GP mentioned it’s Herpes. I never had sex (whether orally or through vaginal intercourse) when the cold sore was present. And my 1st bf had no problem even till today.

Can I transmit HPV (genital warts) to my current bf if I only had a history of cold sores on the lips only? I never had genital warts or genital herpes before. I had pap smear done recently & it was also tested negative. If I have HPV, does that mean it HAS to be positive on pap smear?

If assuming my current bf has the HPV in him for the last 1-2 years and the warts only surface now, does that mean I would certainly get it as we had unprotected sex when I was having my menses. Is there a window period for me to go for pap smear to test for HPV?
Answer - There are more than 100 different strains of the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV). Some of them are known to have cause Genital Warts, which is an STI, whereas others are linked to skin warts on the feet, fingers etc but are not STI. HPV that causes genital warts are usually spread by direct skin-to-skin contact during sexual exposures or even heavy petting but not through blood, seminal and vaginal fluid. HPV may be more likely transmitted when warts are present but transmission is possible even when there are no visible signs. There are individuals who carry the virus for months and years but do not show up. Hence, it is difficult to determine the source of the infection.
Genital warts is diagnosed by its clinical appearances, ie. the cauliflower growths. There is no test available for screening. For women, a pap smear may be able to pick up the HPV from the cervix.
Warts is a treatable condition but not curable, thus, there may be a chance for recurrence. Treatment can only be administered for patients with the visible warts. There may be a chance to recur after the treatment.

Similarly, Herpes is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact. This occurs when a contagious area comes into contact with a tiny break in the skin or mucous membrane tissue, primarily the mouth and genitals. Herpes can be transmitted both when symptoms are present and sometimes when symptoms are not present.
Herpes, especially type 1(cold sores) on the mouth can be transmitted through kissing. Genital Herpes (usually type 2) is transmitted from sexual intercourse(oral, vaginal and anal). However, an individual with cold sores on the mouth may transmit the virus to the genital if there is oral sex being performed on another partner, and vice versa.
Herpes is usually diagnosed at the time of presentation. A specimen from a blister can be sent to the laboratory for viral culture, which is still the current gold standard for diagnosis. A blood test is reliable if it is done by the latest method, which is known as Type Specific Serology Test (HSV TSST) for Herpes but it may not be widely available. This screens for previous exposure to the virus, which can be done 8 weeks after the exposure. All other forms of blood tests have not been known to be reliable.

It is important to note that having one infection will not lead or change to another infection. In addition, sexual activities during menses will not give rise to catching an infection.

Question: Hi, in a recent smear (PAP) test I showed positive for HPV. The nurse told me it was not a strain associated with warts and that I was to return in 6months for another smear (PAP) test, which I did. Again I showed positive for HPV and I also had some cell changes which I then had to attend the clinic to be cauterised (burned) in my cervix. However, just after this, my ex-boyfriend, from 1 year previously, told me that he has been diagnosed with Genital warts and that this was probably due to my HPV (he and I had had unprotected sex for 1+ years).

I am confused because I was told my HPV strain was not associated with warts but now it seems that it has caused this in him, is this likely?

Also, I displayed only two raised lumps on my thicg 1 year ago, which I was told by the clinic were not warts but were a different skin contagion- moluscum contagiosum. I am very confused because if an ex-bf has warts then surely it is more likely that this is what these are on me?

Any advice appreciated, many thanks.

You may wish to clarify with the institution that had done the Pap smear for you and seek management if your test report did show HPV effect.

Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin condition cause by the pox virus. Molluscum can be transferred by direct skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the infection. It can be transmitted through sexual or non-sexual contact with an infected area.

Question: Dear dr, would like to make an enquiry, i have plantar warts at the feet.

My question is
1.can plantar warts cause genital warts?
2.Is the plantar warts the same as genital warts?
3.i have herpes 1 and 2, will this cause genital warts?
Answer - There are more than 100 different strains of the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV). Some of them are known to have cause Genital Warts, which is an STI, whereas others are linked to skin warts on the feet, fingers etc but are not STI. Plantar Warts are not related to Genital Warts.
Similarly, Herpes and Warts are cause by different viruses. Hence, having Herpes infection will not bring about Warts infection.

Question: My bf is diagnosed with genital warts. Both of us did not have history of genital warts, other then being infected unknowingly previously, what are the other causes of it? Is it 100% positive that I will get infected if my bf have it? (He is my only sex partner)

Question: Couple of years ago, I used to have a few genital warts around my penis. These had been treated and removed, with no more new growth since then. I know that genital warts are not curable, there is a chance of recurrence. Now I just have a new girlfriend, and I am worried that I will spread to her. Is this possible? If yes, any preventive measures?
Answer - Genital warts are usually spread by direct skin to skin contact during sexual exposures(oral, vaginal and anal), even without penetrations like heavy petting. This virus may be more likely transmitted when the warty growths are present but transmission is possible even when there are no visible signs. There are individuals who carry the virus for months and years but do not show the warty growths. Hence, the only preventive measure is to use protection like condom.

Question: I am a 37 yo female with warts, which have been reoccurring for 31/2 years. I get treatment iwth freezing and aldara and I cannot seem to get more than 10 months without 2-3 warts developing. I haven't had sex since my diagnosis and I will not. I am devistated and have considered suidicide on occassions. I feel like a dirty filthy creature. Can you give my advice on how to minimise the reoccurrence of warts
Answer - Warts is a treatable condition but not curable, thus, there may be a chance for recurrence. Treatment can only be administered for patients with the visible Warts. There may be a chance to recur after the treatment.
Genital Warts are commonly treated using the following methods:
1) Chemicals like podophyllin paint, podophyllotoxin paint, and TCA (trichloracetic acid)
2) Liquid nitrogen
3) Aldara cream
4) Surgery removal
Sometimes, a combination of methods is used, and repeated courses of treatment may be necessary.

There are various reasons for its recurrences and are highly individual. Illnesses like immune comprised infections eg. HIV; poor diet, emotional or physical stress, medications etc can trigger an outbreak.
The frequency of outbreaks can often be managed through effective stress management, and getting adequate rest, nutrition, and exercise.
Do not be despair but learn to recognise more about Warts. We hope you will be able to manage this condition and life goes on.
