Hi. (1) I\'d like to know if there are any documented cases whereby there was HIV infected blood on a glass and someone got accidentally cut by the glass and got infected with HIV? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this? (2) What about knives? If someone gets cut by a knife with HIV blood on it will the person get HIV? Are there any documented cases of this happening? What other diseases can be possibly spread by this? (3) If lets say someone on the street accidentally fell down and is bleeding profusely, and i help the person and my hands are covered with his blood, will i get diseases from his blood (assuming that in case 1 i have an open wound on my hand, and case 2 i do not have open wound on my hand)? what are the chances of catching diseases from case 1 and 2? are there any documented cases of this incidents whereby the passerby got infected with diseases? Question: Dear Counsellor,
Do you recommend testing for hepatitis C if someone has protected sex with CSW? if so, where can I get that testing and what is the cost. Why DSC only provide testing for hepatitis B?

Thanks
Answer - Hepatitis C is a blood borne infection via transmission route like sharing contaminated needles and syringes. It is usually not an STI unless there is large amount of blood being exchanged during sexual contact.
The DSC Clinic does offer screening for Hepatitis C.

Question: dear dr.

recently after visiting my gynae, i'm diagnosed with vaginitis and candida.
as my bf and i did have sex without condom just before the infection; what are the test he can undergo to check if he is infected. would DSC clinic have service to check for it or do we have to go to an urologist?
Answer - Yeast infection for the males may give rise to penile itch and rash. If there is this discomfort experienced by him, he can visit a doctor for the test and treatment. There is no test for individuals without the signs and symptoms.
If Bacterial Vaginosis impacts on a male, one may have discomfort like mild pain, itch and discharge from the urethra. A screening by means of urethral smear can be carried out to determine the cause. He may wish to attend the DSC Clinic or an urologist.

Question: I did a Hepatitis B test on 25 Oct 07 and result indicated Non reactive (65 IU/L). I ever asked a doctor to advise if i should take a booster or take 3 jabs again, he said that I don't have to and will not be a Hep B carrier for the rest of my life because I had protection against it last time. My only worries is that if I take the test again and result is lest than 10 IU/L, am I safe to kiss and had sex with Hep B carrier, will I be transmitted? How is Hep B transmit to another person?
Answer - Hepatitis B can be transmitted through sexual contact(oral, vaginal and anal). The use of condoms can help in the prevention of this infection. Individuals who are not infected can receive vaccination as a further prevention.
The other transmission mode is by receiving contaminated blood products, needle sharing and needle stick injury, sharing contaminated equipment e.g. tattooing and acupuncture needles, and infected mothers passing to the child.

It is unlikely to get STI including Hepatitis B through deep wet kissing or French kissing, unless there is bleeding gums or ulcers in both parties and even this is considered a low risk. There is no documented case of someone infected through this mode.

If your antibody test for Hepatitis B reflects 10 IU/L, you may wish to consider a re-jab or booster, which you can discuss with the attending doctor.

Question: hi

first of all thank you for creating this site wherein you provide relevant data that could ease our confusions and fears.

i would to ask something related to chronic hepa b, which is my bf had.

1. how many years are expected from them to live once they acquire the disease? (average)

2. if the partner has already immunized from hepa b, would it be okey if they would not use a condom during intercourse?
(note: the anti hbs was reactive)

3. after having a 3 shots from immunization, is that already a life guarantee? or i have to repeat it again after how many years.

4. were planning to get married, but im afraid that the virus could create harm when the sperm and egg will meet and will create abnormality to our baby in the future. should i be worried?

thank you very much, i am looking forward for your reply.. more power
Answer - 1. Hepatitis B is a treatable and manageable viral infection though not curable. There are new medications that can help some carriers to get rid of their infection. You should seek advice from a specialist for further information.

2. If a person had completed the full course of vaccination, the person may be protected against catching the infection. However, this is not a guaranteed outcome, as different individuals will have different responses. Moreover, there are other STIs that one can be vulnerable.

3. After completing the immunisation, one may wish to repeat the blood test after 5 years and this will help to determine if a booster is needed.

4. Generally, pregnancy and childbirth is not an issue. This subject can be discussed in details with the attending physician.

Question: Hi, would like to enquire that if my partner (female) have thrush and BV, would i be infected if i uave unprotected sex with her?
As i couldnt find any STI that is relevant for male relating to thrush and BV?
Answer - Thrush, which is also known as candidiasis or moniliasis, is a fungus infection. In males, this may present as red itchy rashes on the genital if the sex partner has the infection. For males, this is treated with the appropriate topical medication.

Similarly, bacterial vaginosis(BV) may impact on the male partner leading to urethral discharge and/ or pain when urinating. This is treated with the appropriate oral antibiotics.

Answer - Hepatitis B can be transmitted when there is unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex. The vaccination against Hepatitis B is effective in protecting one from having the infection. You should take the vaccination against Hepatitis B since your boyfriend has the infection. The baby will not risk being infected if the mother does not have the infection.

It is unlikely to get STI and HIV through deep wet kissing or French kissing, unless there is bleeding gums or ulcers in both parties and even this is considered a low risk. There is no documented case of someone infected through this mode.

Question: my husband just tested HBsAg positive, ANTI HBC IgM EIA positive, HBeAg positive, HBeAb negative what does this mean.
Answer - This reflects that your husband is being infected with Hepatitis B and he does not have the immunity against the condition. There is a need for him to be followed up by a doctor for management.

Question: can you tell me why and how trick possibly goes away in men?
Answer - Trichomoniasis is a common STI and is treatable with the appropriate anti-microbial, which can lead to a cure. The partner(s) should be treated as well and one should abstain from sex during treatment. Re-infection can happen due to re-exposure or other factors like poor absorption of the medication and poor compliance of treatment.
Signs and symptoms are observed in the females but less common for the males.

Question: Hi,

I was wondering if molluscum contagiousum can be transferred to the mouth through oral sex...inside
the mouth. Is it guarantee that if the person performing oral sex comes into contact with an area on the skin where the papule is completely not visible that the virus will transfer? I've treated this condition for quite some time now, and am currently with a new partner. I have not informed my partner because I havn't been able to spot any really noticeable areas. Any that I do spot is spot treated with Aldara. While on medication, can it still transfer? I know these are a lot of questions, I appreciate your answers.

Thank you.

Johnny
Answer - Molluscum contagiosum is a skin infection caused by a pox virus. It is a common skin condition and it can be sexually transmitted during sexual intercourse, hence, impacting on the genital, and mouth if there is oral sex. An infected person may not develop the signs but there is a risk of transmission during sex. The diagnosis is by means of clinical examination and test. It is a treatable infection with the appropriate topical therapy.
