| Question: |
Dear Doc,
I went to massage spa recently and received a handjob and a body rub. Therapist licked my penis once and I stopped her after that. Do I need to go a for a HIV test? I'm worried sick.
Thanks, |
| Answer - |
The hand job and body rub did not put you at risk for STI and HIV. Similarly, it is unlikely that you are at risk from the brief contact on your penis. Hence, a test is not needed. |

| Question: |
I was in Thailand last week and did something I really regretted. I allow a pros to perform oral sex on me without a condom. Then I have sex with her with a condom. The condom did not broke. This is the 1st time I have sex with another girl who is not my wife. What is my risk of having HIV. |
| Answer - |
If you did have protected oral, vaginal and anal sex, the risk is minimal for STI and HIV. However, on account of the unprotected oral sex, this poses a low risk for HIV but other STI such as Gonorrhoea, Herpes and Syphilis can be transmitted. The risk of HIV transmission through unprotected oral sex increases if there is contact with body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids and blood, with the presence of sores and broken skin.
Do not put yourself at such risk. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV. |

So long as the wife is negative for HIV, there is no issue on a pregnancy from a sperm donor. |

| Question: |
Dear Doctor,
I had protected sex with a sex worker on 24 August. I understand that condoms will offer effective protection, but they are not 100% safe. What is the probability that I will contract HIV even with protected sex?
|
| Answer - |
If you are seeking for an absolute figure of your risk, we are not in the position to state. We could assure you that if you did have protected oral, vaginal and anal sex, the risk is minimal for STI and HIV. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV. |

| Question: |
I had sex today with a massage therapist. We used a condom during intercourse and when she performed oral sex. However, as I went down on her there was no protection, we also kissed. The condom didn't break nor was their leakage, I will do the HIV test after 30 days, but do you also recommend Post Exposure Prophyylaxis? If so is this available from any doctor? |
| Answer - |
Kissing does not put one at risk for STI including HIV.
If you did have protected oral, vaginal and anal sex, the risk is minimal for STI and HIV. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
However, the unprotected oral sex that you had done poses a low risk for HIV but other STI such as Herpes and Syphilis can be transmitted. Do not put yourself at such risk. Licking of the female genital can be protected by using a dental dam, household food wrap like Glad Wrap and a latex condom cut up and open flat. Dental dams are small, thin, square pieces of latex that are used by dentists but can also be used for oral sex. They get their names from their use in dental procedures. This is available from the dentist and pharmacy as well.
The Post Exposure Prophylaxis(PEP) - antiviral drugs, can be taken within 72
hours after possible exposure. You can refer to main page in the website for more information about the details. This is only available at certain institution like the DSC Clinic. |

| Question: |
Hi,
I had an unprotected oral sex with a sex worker last month. After three days, I had a burning sensation on my penis at the same time sores on my mouth and gums. I also experience some headache as well as swollen lymph node on my neck.
Is this related to HIV? |
| Answer - |
We would not be able to speculate on what could be the cause of the problem. We would advice you to consult a doctor as a physical examination is needed especially the burning sensation on your penis. Your problem is not related to HIV infection. HIV is diagnosed through a blood test, not through signs and symptoms. You can go for a HIV test 1 month after exposure and retest at the 3rd month for a conclusive result. |

| Question: |
Dear Expert,
Some weeks ago, I was kindly helped by you and your answer really made me feel good again. Thanks for your kindness!
But I have one question to ask you and I am very worried!
I have one son, he is 3 years old and growing teeth.
Yesterday, I took him to the park, when I was busy with preparing food, my son was playing with one strange man, but suddenly, my son bit that strange man and made the healing wound in the arm of that man BLEED.
I think that my son could consume a little amount of blood, then immediately my son drank a spoon of milk. So, I am afraid that blood could go to the stomach of my son.
I am worried that that man was poz and my son could catch HIV from biting him. Did saliva in the mouth kill off HIV before it enter the
body of my son?And if there was a little amount of blood taken into his stomach, did acidity in the stomach kill off HIV? Could HIV enter the body via the mucous membrane in his throat or stomach?
Sorry for being so annoying. I am so worried about the safety of my son once I send him to the school.
Best wishes, |
| Answer - |
You can be assured that consumption of blood will not bring about HIV infection. If the mouth has open wound, sores, bleeding gum etc, one may be at risk for HIV infection if the blood has been contaminated with the virus.
It is unlikely that your son is at risk. If you are still worried, a test may be made to allay your fears and offer peace of mind. |

| Question: |
Hi, to start with i would like to know if i would get HIV from the following action i had done. I had went to a massaging centre for a massage. The girl sat on top of me and started rubbing her private parts on my penis. This lasted for some times but i must said she was with her panties and i am wearing my underwear. After i came, i took a shower and headed back home. What happened next was, when i reached home i did a very stupid act. I took up my underwear and put it on my nose and i sniff hard onto the portion where the massage girl rubbed on. The next morning when i went to bush my teeth, i happened to blow my nose and i see a little lump of blood on the basin. Of course no bleeding .Please help....I am very worried and frightened. Do i get hIV from this stupid action, i might afraid that the vaginal fluids or air-borne virus or particles from the fluids get into my nose and through my mucus membrane since there is blood being blow out in the morning. I am hoping that you will give me an assuring answer to let me get through this hard times. Thank you an0d i promise i will never do it again. |
| Answer - |
Your encounter did not put you at risk for STI and HIV. |

| Question: |
Dear Doc,
I'm really very worried.... i just had first-time unprotected sex with a vietnam pub girl... which is 15th aug..i'm now really afraid that i may get HIV or AIDS .. what should i do? how long more should i go for a blood test... |
| Answer - |
Unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex, will put one at risk for STI and HIV. Do not put yourself at such risk. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently and where there is no breakage or leakage, provide effective protection against sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
You may wish to consider performing an STI screening to allay your fears. In STI screening, a person can go for a blood test 3 months after exposure for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B. A Herpes blood test will be reliable if done under the Type Specific Serology Test (HSV TSST) for Herpes but it may not be widely available. This screens for previous exposure to the virus, which can be done 8 weeks after the exposure.
For a male, other screening involves swabs to be taken from the penis. Additional swabs may also be taken from the rectum and throat. He will need to hold urine for 4 hours before the swabs can be taken. The tests can be done shortly after exposure and will screen for:
- Gonorrhoea
- NGU/Chlamydia |

| Question: |
Hi Doc, what if i went to a massage health centre, and I got fresh cuts/wounds on my feet, and her hands touches or rub against my feet while massaging... If she is infected with HIV or other STD, would i be at any risk at all? i.e. i am not sure if she has fresh cuts on her hands...
I did not have sex with her, nor even hand job (though the massage was done with me naked).
Do i need to go for tests ?
Pls advise as I am very worried...until now...Thanks ! |
| Answer - |
You are not at risk from the massage. There will be a risk for certain STIs like HIV if both parties have fresh open wound that comes into contact at the same time. |

| Question: |
Dear Doc,
i used to work in a diagnosis lab that have contact with blood/serum samples. I came upon contact with a serum tube without my gloves on around 1 year ago. Although my skin is intact and there are no open cuts, i'm still worried that i might get infected with the HIV virus. It happen a year ago and the thought had lingered in my mind.
However, i don't know if i should go for testing as i am not sure how the result will turn out. Would you recommend me to get tested for a peace of mind? Or am i at no risk of getting infected?? Am i also eligible to take the anonymous testing for HIV??
As I am in NS now, i don't know if the army have done any screening for HIV whilst I took the medical screeing in january.
Pls Advice
thanks,
worried |
| Answer - |
You did not risk being infected with HIV while working in a laboratory; hence, a test is not needed. Universal precautions should be a practise when in a medical and laboratory setting.
You may wish to check with SAF regarding the details of your medical screening. |
